French teen Arthur Fils has become the youngest ATP singles champion this year after scoring a 6-3, 7-5 win over Argentine Francisco Cerundolo. The 18-year-old also becomes the youngest champion in the history of the tournament.

Fils joins world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz and world No 6 Holger Rune as the teenaged champions on the tour this year.

“I will remember this forever,” Fils said according to the ATP Tour website. “It has been a great week. It has been amazing. I am happy with the win and now I want more. It was a tough semi-final match. Today I came onto court with not lots of energy, but I was focused on my game and trying my best.”

The Frenchman will make his top 100 debut and climb to No 63 in the world rankings on Monday. He will open his French Open campaign against 29th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
