A first since November 2003: No Big 3 member in world’s Top 2 next week

With Medvedev and Zverev taking over the top two spots next week, the top of the rankings will have a very different feeling next week

There will be some big changes in the ATP rankings next week with Russia’s Daniil Medvedev climbing back to the top spot, following his three-week stint earlier in the year, and Germany’s Alexander Zverev climbing to No 2 for the first time in his career.

Part of next week’s change will be driven by the fact that points from last year’s French Open will drop off on Monday as the tournament was held one week later in 2021. (Editor Note. Points from the 2022 French Open have already been added to the player’s totals).

As a result of these changes, June 13 will mark the first time since November 10, 2003 that neither member of the Big 3 will rank among the world’s top 2.

Novak Djokovic, the champion in Paris 12 months ago, will lose his points from winning in 2021 and as a result will see his ranking drop from No 1 to No 3 on June 13. Rafael Nadal, who has won the first two Grand Slams of the season but missed Wimbledon and the US Open last year, will be ranked fourth next week.

Meanwhile, Swiss Roger Federer, who has not played since Wimbledon in 2021, is ranked No 50 this week, and will drop even further when his points for reaching the fourth round in Pqris drop off next week.

Back to the week of November 10, 2003, American Andy Roddick held the No 1 position while Spain’s Juan Carlos Ferrero was ranked No 2. Federer was ranked No 3 that week while Nadal was No 47 and Djokovic was No 680.

Here is a look at the top 10 for the week of November 10, 2003 when the last time this anomaly occurred.
