Is Andy Murray still playing?

Yes. Murray continues to play, despite being hindered by the fact that he has a metal hip from his well-documented hip operation in 2019, surgery that saved his career. The Scot reached the third round at the Australian Open in 2023, a loss in the Doha final, and three Challenger titles. He has long said he will continue to play on for as long as he believes he can compete at the highest level.

After struggling towards the end of the 2023 season, failing to serve out a match against Alex de Minaur in Paris twice over, and smashing a racquet five times, Murray admitted to some anger and frustration, and that he was not currently enjoying his tennis at all.

He said: “Rather than when I’m on the court competing and it just being about, ‘Let’s try to get the win over the guy in front of you,’ I’m spending a lot of time focusing on myself, how I’m feeling, how my shots are and I’m just getting extremely frustrated with that. It’s not a great place to be on the court.”

After losing to Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the first round of the 2024 Australian Open, Murray told the press that he had spoken to his family and his team about the best time for retirement, and admitted it was challenging for him to return to tennis knowing that he had more physical limitations than in his prime.

After his loss to Ugo Humbert in Dubai in February, Murray said that he was likely in the last few months of his career, and that he would not be playing much beyond the summer of 2024.

Murray reached the second round at Indian Wells, before falling in the third round of the 2024 Miami Open in a high-quality encounter. At the end of that loss, however, he endured yet another bruising setback, suffering a severe ankle injury that he later conceded would keep him out for “an extended period”. After scans, it was revealed that he suffered a full rupture of his anterior talofibular ligament and near full-thickness rupture of his calcaneofibular ligament. It puts his summer in serious doubt, a period which had recently been expected to be his farewell to tennis.

Will Andy Murray play the 2024 Olympic Games?

Murray’s comments about retirement were taken as a hint that he may hang up his racquets after the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. He is a two-time gold medallist, winning in London and then in Rio. However, in March 2024, he said that he would only play the Olympics in Paris if he felt he had a chance of winning a medal, rather than taking the opportunity away from another player.

Who is Andy Murray’s coach?

On March 4, 2022, it was confirmed that Andy Murray would work with Ivan Lendl for a third time. The pair previously worked together from 2011-2014 and 2016-17, and all three of Murray’s slam wins, his two Olympic golds and reaching No 1 happened while they worked together. Lendl was notably absent from Murray’s entourage towards the end of 2023, though, having not been spotted in the player box since the US Open, and it was confirmed in November 2023 that they had split again.

He’s also recently added friend and doubles specialist Jonny O’Mara to his coaching team as well.

What are the biggest titles Murray has won?

He is a three-time Grand Slam champion, winning the US Open in 2012, and Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016. He was the ATP Finals champion in 2016, and he is also a two-time Olympic gold medallist, winning the men’s singles in 2012 in London, and in Rio four years later. He also led Great Britain to victory in the 2015 Davis Cup. He has won 46 singles titles worldwide.

How much prize money has he won?

He has won over $63,876,000 over the course of his career, in singles and doubles.

Why has Murray been receiving so many wildcards?

Murray was absent from the tour for much of the time between 2017 and 2020 following surgery to resurface and replace his hip, meaning he has sunk down the rankings. His decision to undergo surgery and his subsequent recovery were chronicled in the Amazon Prime documentary “Andy Murray: Resurfacing”.

Many people thought that the 2019 Australian Open was going to be his last tournament when he revealed that he would be heading into the operating theatre, saying:

“I have an option to have another operation, which is a little bit more severe than what I have had before. Having my hip resurfaced will allow me to have a better quality of life, be out of pain. That is something I’m seriously considering right now. Some athletes have had that and gone back to competing. But there are obviously no guarantees with that, and it is not something…the reason for having an operation is not to return to professional sport, it’s just for a better quality of life.”

He returned to tennis in the summer of 2019, winning the men’s doubles at Queen’s alongside his friend Feliciano Lopez, and won his first singles title since the surgery at the European Open in October 2019, beating Stan Wawrinka in the final.

Murray then picked up an injury to his pelvis which kept him out of Davis Cup action and the 2020 Australian Open.

Some commentators – including former champion Mats Wilander, who made his views known ahead of the 2020 French Open – suggested that an established player like Murray shouldn’t be receiving wildcards at this point in his career, and they would be better used by up-and-coming players who could do with a break.

Since then, Murray also received a wildcard for Wimbledon – a tournament where he is a two-time champion – as well as other events on tour where his current ranking would not guarantee entry. But he continues to battle and as of March 27 2024, he is ranked No 59 in the official ATP rankings.

What other sports does Andy Murray like?

He is a fan of basketball, boxing and football, and was once offered a trial with Rangers FC. He and his brother also enjoyed watching professional wrestling as children. He is also an excellent golfer.

What does he do outside tennis?

Andy Murray has plenty of other business interests – including an investment in a luxury hotel near his hometown Dunblane, plus a sports management company, which represents athletes including British tennis players Katie Swan and Paul Jubb.

He acts as an ambassador for charities including UNICEF, United for Wildlife, Malaria No More and WWF.

He is on social media as well – with 3,600,000 likes on Facebook, 3,500,000 followers on Twitter, and 1.7 million followers on Instagram.
