Twelve months ago, Carlos Alcaraz was ranked No 120, a highly-exciting prospect for the future but still a young man with a lot to learn.

One year on, the 19-year-old has five titles to his name, including two Masters 1000s, and his victory at the Madrid Masters means he will climb three places to be ranked a career-high No 6 when the rankings are updated on Monday.

Alcaraz thrilled the crowds in Madrid throughout the week and though he beat their darling, Rafael Nadal, in the quarter-finals, the home support then switched 100 percent to Alcaraz, who promptly beat Novak Djokovic and then Alexander Zverev for his biggest clay-court title to date.

With five wins from five finals on Tour and four titles in 2022, he’s the hottest property on the men’s Tour and as Zverev said: “You’re going to win many Grand Slams, be world No 1 and win this title many times.”

Djokovic still No 1 as Medvedev takes a break

With Daniil Medvedev currently off the Tour through injury, Novak Djokovic continues to ride high at the top of the world rankings, though the chasing pack are closing in.

Medvedev himself is just 270 points behind while Zverev is just over 1,000 points down following his run to the final in Madrid.

New career-high rankings this week

Miomir Kecmanovic – up 1 to No 31
Sebastien Baez – up 3 to No 37
Pedro Martinez – up 4 to No 40
Holger Rune – up 3 to No 42
Lorenzo Musetti – up 12 to No 51
Jiri Lehecka – up 9 to No 79
Tomas Martin Etcheverry – up 4 to No 90
Quentin Halys – up 1 to 100
