Federer drops out of ATP rankings for first time in 25 years

Roger Federer – one of tennis’s constants over the past quarter-century – is now without a single ATP ranking point to his name.

That means he is no longer included within the rankings system. His run at Wimbledon last year – when he reached the quarter-finals – had protected him up until this point, keeping him within the Top 100.

Now, however, those points have dropped off – and as he hasn’t played a tour event since then, he has no points at all.

That means he’ll be dependent on wild cards should he wish to enter an event – although bearing in mind he has 20 Grand Slams to his name, that shouldn’t be too hard to sort out.

Federer has been in the ATP rankings since September 1997, when he was 16 years old.

He has already announced his intention to play in Basel in October, by which time he will be 41 years old – and he will also be part of the Laver Cup exhibition tournament before that.

And he has suggested that if he is fit, he hopes to be on the tour in 2023 – even if he doesn’t play a full schedule. He had said in June that he doesn’t plan to “play 20 tournaments a year” any more – but thrilled fans at Wimbledon Centre Court by telling them he intended to return there “one more time”.
