Daniil Medvedev prevailed in a fascinating match against Alexander Zverev, moving closer to the semi-finals of the 2021 Nitto ATP Finals as he won their Red Group clash 6-3, 6-7(3), 7-6(6).

If Hubert Hurkacz beats Matteo Berrettini later on Tuesday, Medvedev’s place in the last four will be confirmed.

The two met for the 11th time, with Medvedev now edging the head-to-head 6-5 – but he has also won their last five encounters, three of which have come this year.

And he has an equally impressive winning spell at the Finals in general – now 7-0 after going 0-3 in his 2019 debut in the year-end showpiece event.

And to add insult to injury, Medvedev now equals Zverev’s tour-leading record this year of 56 wins.

Medvedev went into this match with his serve unbroken as yet in Turin, and saved three break points in his first two service games against Zverev. The world No 2 was dominant in the first set, taking it in 37 minutes.

Zverev was stronger in the second, though, and benefited from Medvedev’s second-serve foot-fault early on in the tiebreak, which caused a brief disruption as both players discussed the call with the umpire.

But it was Medvedev who triumphed, serving the stronger in the deciding tiebreak, and taking his third match point to move one step closer to defending his crown.
