Montreal Masters: Monfils makes second round for his first match since May

Frenchman Gael Monfils, the No 17 seed, reached the second round of the Montreal Masters by beating Spaniard Pedro Martinez 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-2 at Stade IGA on Tuesday.

Monfils, ranked No 20, will play American Maxime Cressy next.

It was his first match since May. He missed Roland-Garros and Wimbledon for a foot injury.
