Brandon Nakashima confirmed his place in the semi-finals of the Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals, beating Holger Rune 3-4, 4-1, 4-1, 4-3 to finish the round-robin stage as the Group A runner-up.

“It was a very tough match, right from the beginning. There were some nerves, a little bit, at the beginning, but I just tried to stay focused, one point at a time, and play to my strengths out there to get the win.”

He is the second American to reach this stage of the tournament, following Frances Tiafoe in 2019.

Rune peppered his game with too many unforced errors, and Nakashima took three-quarters of his break points – six of the eight on offer over the course of one hour and 38 minutes on court.

The 20-year-old is the tournament’s fourth seed, and now joins Group A winner Carlos Alcaraz in the final four.
