Bublik bounces Murray out of Newport

Kazakh Alexander Bublik, the No 3 seed, moved into the semi-finals of the Hall of Fame Open by winning against No 6 seed Andy Murray 7-5, 6-4 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum in Newport on Friday evening.

Bublik, ranked No 42, will face the winner of the match between Jason Murray Kubler and No 8 seed James Duckworth next.

“I don’t have any tournaments to come in in the next three weeks,” Bubliks said. “So yeah, I’m engaged to play I’m engaged to try to get as many matches as I can.”

The 25-year-old earns his second career win over three-time Grand Slam champion Murray – the pair have split four meetings in 2022, with each winning one on grass.

Murray drops to 19-11 on the season, but is slated to make his return to the ATP’s top-50 next week for the first time since 2017.

In the previous round of the Hall of Fame Open, the Kazakh defeated American Jack Sock (6-3, 3-6, 6-2).

Murray, ranked No 52, beat American Sam Querrey (6-2, 6-0) and Australian wildcard Max Purcell (4-6, 6-2, 6-1) earlier in the tournament.
