Olympic champion Alexander Zverev ended the brilliant run of Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz as he recorded a 6-3, 6-3 win over the 18-year-old to reach the final of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna on Saturday.

The German world No 4 had too much firepower on serve and took his chances on the Spaniard’s serve to set up a final against either American Frances Tiafoe, who came from a set and 5-2 down to beat Jannik Sinner.

Zverev broke twice to win the first set and once, at 4-3 in the second, saving the only break point he faced in the match to close out for victory and see off Alcaraz, who beat both Andy Murray and Matteo Berrettini to get to the semis.

It’s Zverev’s fifth final of 2021 and the bad news for Tiafoe is that he has won the previous four.
