Straight to Wimbledon? Alcaraz pulls out of Queen’s due to elbow issue

The world No 6 has played only two official matches on grass in his career with a 1-1 record

Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz, who has leapfrogged into the world’s top 10 after an incredible first six months of the season, has pulled out of next week’s Queen’s Club Championships due to an elbow issue.

19-year-old Alcaraz has risen to No 6 in the world after winning his first ATP 500 series title, his first ATP 1000 Series title in Miami, his first ATP 1000 series title in Rome and reaching his first French Open quarter-final. But he it is likely now that he will be next seen at Wimbledon, without playing any warm-up events on grass prior to that.

In a message he posted on social media, Alcaraz said he was “super excited to plat at Queen’s Club but a slight elbow issue means he can’t. I hope to be there in 2023.”

Alcaraz is confident that he will be at Wimbledon as he signs off his tweet saying “See you all in the United Kingdom in a few days.”

Alcaraz has a 1-1 record on the ATP Tour on grass

Alcaraz has only played two official matches on grass in his career. The Spaniard defeated Yasutaka Uchiyama, ranked No 116 in the world at the time, in five sets in the first round at Wimbledon in 2021 and was defeated by Daniil Medvedev, ranked No 2, in straight sets in the following round.

It remains to be seen if Alcaraz will be able to translate his success and confidence on hard courts and clay courts to the grass courts without any tune-up events.

In Murcia, Alcaraz confirms he won’t play any pre-Wimbledon tournament.

In other Alcaraz news, the 19-year-old has confirmed that he will play at the Swiss Indoors ATP event in Basel in October, which is also one of the two events that Roger Federer has put on his comeback schedule.
