Japan Open: Third seed Fritz, back from Covid, battles past Duckworth in first round

American Taylor Fritz, the No 3 seed, moved into the second round of the Japan Open by beating Australian James Duckworth 6-2, 6-7 (2), 6-1 at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo on Wednesday.

Fritz, ranked No 11, will face lucky loser Hiroki Moriya next.

Fritz had to sit out the event in Seoul last week after testing positive for Covid-19 but showed no signs of fatigue as he battled into round two.
