Wimbledon’s Russian ban sees Djokovic drop to No 7 and Medvedev remain No 1 in latest ATP rankings

Russia’s Daniil Medvedev remained at No 1 for the eighth week as the latest ATP rankings came out on Monday, which saw Novak Djokovic drop to No 7 despite winning his seventh Wimbledon and 21st Grand Slam title on Sunday.

Djokovic, who defeated Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in four sets to move within one of the all-time Grand Slam record in men’s tennis currently held by Rafael Nadal, dropped four spots to seventh position despite defending his title due to the ATP Tour’s decision not to allot any points for the 2022 edition of Wimbledon.

That decision was in response to Wimbledon’s refusal to permit Russian and Belarusian players to participate at the grass court Major this year, which led to the absence of Medvedev and Andrey Rublev amongst others. This is Djokovic’s lowest ranking since August 2018.

Nadal, who reached the semi-finals and was forced to pull out due to an abdominal tear, climbed up one spot to No 3, one spot behind Germany’s Alexander Zverev.

The rest of the top 10 includes Stefanos Tsitsipas (+1 to No 4), Casper Ruud (+1 to No 5), Carlos Alcaraz (+1 to No 6), Djokovic (-4 to No 7), Rublev (No 8), Felix Auger-Aliassime (No 9) and Jannik Sinner (+3 to No. 10).

Kyrgios, who reached his first career Grand Slam singles final, dropped five spots to No 5.

Federer drops out of ATP rankings for the first time since October 1999

With points from Wimbledon 2021 dropping off this week, the latest rankings sees several players plunge down the ranks.

20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer, who is expected to return at the Laver Cup in September and also play in Basel in October, has dropped out of the rankings after his quarter-final points from last year dropped off on Monday. This is the first time since October 1999 that the Swiss is ranked outside the top 100.

2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini, who pulled out of this year’s even after testing positive for Covid-19, fell four spots to No 15; 2021 semi-finalist Deni Shapovalov dropped seven places to No 23 and and Marton Fucsovics dropped 38 positions to No 97.
