American Mackenzie McDonald, the No 6 seed, defeated Chinese Juncheng Shang 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-3 to move into the second round of the Zhuhai Open at the Zhuhai Hengqin International Tennis Centre on Thursday.
McDonald, ranked No 39, will face Belgian Kimmer Coppejans next.
