Australian tennis world woke up to bad news. Carlos Alcaraz will not play the Australian Open in eight days. The number one player in the world tweeted the information around 10:00 pm central European time, Friday.

Alcaraz, aged 19, has not played a competitive match since the Rolex Paris Masters more than two months ago, when he retired against Holger Rune.

Alcaraz wrote in Spanish that he suffered from a new injury, this time on the right leg. This injury happened during a practice session but the 2021 US Open champion doesn’t say when.

I had worked very hard to be at my best at the Australian Open. It’s hard.

“When I was at my best in preseason, I picked up an injury through a chance, unnatural movement in training. This time it’s the semimembranosus muscle in my right leg.”

“I’d worked so hard to get to my best level for Australia but unfortunately I won’t be able to play the Care A2+ Kooyong or the Australian Open. It’s tough, but I have to be optimistic, recover and look forward. See you in 2024″.

Alcaraz lost twice in an exhibition in December

The current No 1 in the world misses one of his rare opportunities to score extra points at the ATP rankings. He reached the third round at the Australian Open in 2022 before starting his incredible season by winning the Rio ATP 500 tournament in February.

Alcaraz made two appearances at the World Tennis Championships, an exhibition in Mubadala (UAE) mid-December, where he had two heavy losses against Andrey Rublev and Casper Ruud, not giving the impression of being fully fit after his injury to the abdominals.
