Alexander Zverev rounded off the action on Rod Laver Arena on the first day of the 2022 Australian Open, beating his compatriot Daniel Altmaier in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-1, 7-6(1).

Altmaier had been a break up in the third set but could not maintain it, despite valiantly saving four match points and forcing a tiebreak.

Aslan Karatsev was the last seed still playing on Day 1, but he eventually beat Jaime Munar on the Show Court Arena, 3-6, 7-6(1), 6-7(3), 6-4, 7-5 in a match that lasted four hours and 52 minutes. The Russian has plenty to improve on as he racked up 107 unforced errors on the way to victory.
