Edmund Subdues Auger-Aliassime In Battle of In-Form Players

Kyle Edmund had won his last six. Felix Auger-Aliassime had won nine of his last eleven. In a battle of two in-form players, it’s the Brit
— the recent New York Open champion — who emerged victorious (6-4, 6-4) against the Canadian — a runner-up in Rotterdam and Marseille — to advance to the quarterfinals in Acapulco.

Kyle Edmund, February 2020

Make that seven straight for Kyle Edmund, who claimed his best win of February ranking-wise against world No. 19 Felix Auger-Aliassime (6-4, 6-4) in Acapulco.

In a match played in scorching hot conditions, it is the Brit who stroke first, breaking the 19-year-old Canadian in the first game and holding firm behind 88% of first points won to secure the first set 6-4.

The British No. 2 broke again for 2-1 in the second set and saved the only two break points he faced all match to close out the match 6-4, 6-4.

Felix Auger-Aliassime looked naturally tired, competing in his 14th match in the last 22 days.

But he heads to the American hardcourt swing (Indian Wells/Miami) having racked up two runner-up trophies along with plenty of wins and confidence.

After underwhelming ATP Cup and Australian Open campaigns to start 2020, the Canadian is back to being a factor on the tour.

As for Kyle Edmund, he keeps his great run of form going and could even reclaim Great Britain’s No. 1 ranking at the expense of Dan Evans this week.
