Roland-Garros likely to move back one more week in calendar

Roland-Garros is set to move back an extra week in the calendar this year, according to plans proposed by the WTA Tour, revealed by players on Tuesday.

Roland-Garros Roland-Garros

Having originally moved from its traditional May-June date to a September 20 start date, WTA players posted a proposed schedule that shows Roland-Garros going back one more week to a September 27 start, finishing on October 11.

The plans, which are in part to accommodate more of a clay-court season with Madrid and Rome fitting in before Roland-Garros, were revealed by Belgian player Alison van Uytvanck, picked up on by British player Tara Moore.

If the plans are confirmed, it would mean the WTA Tour would resume in Charleston and Palermo in the week of August 3, followed by Washington, then Cincinnati (perhaps held in New York) and then the US Open, as scheduled, on August 31.

Madrid, Rome and Roland-Garros all played in a one-month period ?

Moving back one week would then mean space for back-to-back combined events in Madrid and Rome, leading into Roland-Garros.

Moore pointed out that none of the ITF events proposed for the last third of the year are more than a $25K, leaving very little opportunity for players outside the top 150 to earn ranking points for the rest of the year.

Van Uytvanck said the WTA Tour players are receiving weekly updates from Tour officials, but Moore said lower-ranked players are being left in the dark.
