Davis Cup Friday Wrap: Zverev beats Wawrinka; Evans upset in Bogota, Serbia and U.S. take 2-0 lead

In perhaps the most eagerly anticipated match of Davis Cup action this weekend, former world No 1 Alexander Zverev, coming off a seven-month injury lay-off, defeated three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka in straight sets in their Davis Cup Qualifier in Trier.

Zverev won 6-4 6-1 to score only his second win since the French Open last June to level the Germany vs Switzerland Davis Cup tie. In the first match of the tie, Marc-Andrea Huesler scored a 2-6 6-2 6-4 win over Oscar Otte to give the Swiss a 1-0 lead.

France and Hungary are also tied at 1-1 as Zsombor Piros beat Benjamin Bonzi 7-6(4) 6-3 in the opening rubber and then Ugo Humbert defeated Marton Fucsovics 6-3 6-2 in the second match.

There was big upset in the Great Britain vs Colombia tie in Bogota as Nicolas Mejia earned his first Top 100 win with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win over Dan Evans. Cameron Norrie brought the Brits back on track with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Nicolas Barrientos.

Serbia, the United States and Sweden were among the teams who took a 2-0 lead after the first day of play.

Miomir Kecmanovic scored a 6-1, 6-3 win over Norway’s Andreja Petrovic, followed by Laslo Djere beating Viktor Durasovic 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(8) after saving a match point to give the Serbs a 2-0 lead. Durasovic was a replacement after the late withdrawal of world No 4 Casper Ruud.

In the US vs Uzbekistan tie, Davis Cup debutante Mackenzie McDonald defeated Sergey Fomin 6-4, 6-1 and then world No 19 and Australian Open semi-finalist Tommy Paul beat Khumoyun Sultanov 6-1, 7-6(6).

In Stockholm, the Ymer brothers Mikael and Elias scored wins to go up 2-0 over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mikael defeated Mirza Basic 6-4, 7-5 while Elias scored a 6-1, 6-4 win over Bosnian No. 1 Damir Dzumhur.
