In a press conference today, Michael Kohlmann revealed he hopes to have their top-ranked singles player available for the Davis Cup in 2023

Alexander Zverev will rejoin the Germany Davis Cup squad in 2023, says captain Michael Kohlmann – at least in some capacity.

“He (Zverev) announced in general he is with us in 2023, no matter if the finals are in November or December, because he likes to be part of the team and wants to win the event,” Kohlmann told reporter Jannik Schneider in their native German.

However, he would not be drawn on exactly how involved Zverev would be, just saying that he “will be with us in particular rounds”.

Germany left the competition this year at the quarter-final stage at the hands of Canada, without their top-ranked player, Zverev, the world No 12, who has missed the second half of the 2022 season after tearing ankle ligaments at Roland-Garros. He had aimed to be back before the end of the year but was then hampered by a bone oedema.

Germany’s Tim Puetz had admitted that Zverev was a huge absence from the squad, saying in their press conference: “I think we are one of the nations competing, yeah, for the Davis Cup, we have shown this numerous times now all while not having our best player, to be honest. Sascha typically, if he’s there, he’s willing to play, you know, just couldn’t be there this year. I think he would probably make us even a little bit stronger.

“He’s a guy that can compete with guys like Felix [Auger-Aliassime], would make our team even a little bit deeper.”
