Get set for another edition of the Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal doubles show. The two former world No 1s have confirmed that they will be in action together again once more, this time at the 2022 Laver Cup, which will be held at London’s O2 in September.

Fresh from his Australian Open victory which took him clear of Federer and Novak Djokovic at the top of the all-time list of Grand Slam winners with 21, Nadal put the Laver Cup in his calendar once more. And Federer, who is recuperating from knee surgery and has not played since Wimbledon, said he was looking forward to getting back on court later in 2022, with the Laver Cup very much part of his plans.

The news drew a huge response on social media, especially when Nadal sent a special message to Federer.

The news means the pair are likely to team up again for Team Europe under captain Bjorn Borg, which should be a lot of fun, if their first outing, in 2017, was anything to go by.

Federer focused on comeback, taking things slowly

While Nadal sits top of the ATP Race after his stunning Australian Open victory, Federer is working hard to get back on the court having missed virtually all of 2020 after double knee surgery and then undergone another knee operation after playing just five events in 2021.

In an interview with Credit Suisse, one of his sponsors, Federer said progress was slow but that he was hoping to return in the late summer of 2022. He’ll know more about timings by April, he said.

“I have very interesting and important few months ahead of me,” Federer told Credit Suisse. “I feel like I will know a whole lot more this coming April where my body is going to be like. Up until now I wasn’t really allowed to run yet, do the heavy workload with jumps and stop-and-go’s. So, I hope that’s all going to start, hopefully in a couple of weeks, and then we will see how the body will react to that.”

“The drive is there, I’m really motivated to do my work and what I’m allowed to do,” Federer continued. “I did it all again this morning and I’m back in the gym tomorrow. “It’s still good times even though it’s a little bit slow because I would love to do way more, but the doctors and everybody is holding me back a little bit.”

The Laver Cup will take place in London for the first time at the O2 from September 23-25.
