“How many Roland-Garroses do I have left?” – Monfils forced to withdraw from the tournament with wrist injury

Gael Monfils is out of this year’s Roland-Garros, revealing he has a wrist injury that will rule him out of tomorrow’s evening match with Holger Rune

After all the scintillating drama of last night’s enthralling five-set victory over Sebastian Baez had abated, there was a lingering sense that Gael Monfils had given all he possibly could to this year’s Roland-Garros.

In a press conference called late on Wednesday evening while Djokovic was finishing his second round, Monfils confirmed that his participation in the tournament was indeed over.

He cited a wrist injury as the problem, and has been forced to withdraw from tomorrow’s second round match again Denmark’s Holger Rune.

The doctor has good hopes that I can play the grass season, but it can be more or less long.

“I have a problem with my wrist I can’t recover from. I had exams and the doctor said it was not good to play and that I should stop”, the Frenchman said in his native language.

“Actually, physically, I’m quite fine. You know, I was quite happy this morning. I woke up quite good. But I had the problem with my wrist that I cannot solve. Felt it during the match. Actually the whole match today. And unfortunately even we push it till tonight, just come back again for another exam, and yes, wait a little
bit.

“I’m not really sure what I feel, but it’s more than being disappointed. How many Roland Garroses will I play? That’s the question. I don’t know what the answer is. How many will I play? So I have just learnt that 30 minutes ago. That’s really new. And for the time being I’m trying to digest this.

“I’ll do more tests tomorrow (Thursday) to know the exact duration. It’s just a partial tear. The doctor has good hopes that I can play the grass season, but it can be more or less long.”

“I wish you a speedy recovery and look forward seeing you back in action soon again”, wrote Holger Rune on Twitter.

It is a devastating end to the tournament for La Monf, who has had tournaments cut short far too many times as he has struggled throughout his career with injury.
