Azarenka defeats Venus in Rome opener

US Open finalist Victoria Azarenka overcame Venus Williams in a battle between former world number one players in the first round at the Italian Open in Rome. Victoria Azarenka has turned up in good form at Rome, just days after losing a heartbreaking final at the US Open to Naomi Osaka. Azarenka, now the WTA No 14, earned a victory over Venus Williams, 7-6(7), 6-2, to avenge a loss from just a month ago on hard courts at Lexington.  Azarenka will next face third-seeded Sofia Kenin in second-round action.
"It’s going to be an interesting match because Sonya’s been my doubles partner for the last two tournaments," said Azarenka. "We know each other quite well."
