Brilliant Hanfmann dumps Monfils out of German Open
Yannick Hanfmann was in inspired form as he beat Gael Monfils 6-4 6-3 in the German Open on Tuesday, handing the Frenchman his second one-and-done on clay this season.
Gael Monfils has been struggling to get back in form after a long hiatus. In his first two tournaments back after six months off, he was knocked out in the first match.
Monfils, the third seed in Hamburg, fell to world No 103 Yannick Hanfmann 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 32. The Frenchman lost serve right at the end of the first to drop the set, and Hanfmann broke in the second to go up 4-2 and finished the match.
