Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, defeated Croat qualifier Jana Fett 6-0, 6-3 to advance to the second round of Wimbledon at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Tuesday afternoon.

She now has an unbeaten streak spanning 36 matches.

Although she finished in comprehensive style, she had a slight wobble at the start of the second set, going 3-1, 40-0 down, saving all the break points – and then winning the next four games as well to seal the win in one hour and 15 minutes.

“It’s my first match on grass this season, so I knew it was going to be tricky,” Swiatek admitted in her on-court interview afterwards. “I’m happy that I came back and could finish in two sets.”

Swiatek – Everything has clicked this season

She added: “I still feel like I’ve only played 12 weeks in my life on grass. The whole atmosphere and tradition here is really pumping me up.”

The 21-year-old admitted she was revelling in her unbeaten streak – and being the top seed.

“I really worked on that,” she said. “All the work we’ve been doing has clicked this season.”

And she had a quick mention for the previous world No 1, Ash Barty, saying: “I’m sad that Ash isn’t here, I would love to play with her on grass.”

Swiatek, ranked No 1, will face Dutch lucky loser Lesley Kerkhove next.
