A day after winning his seventh Wimbledon men’s singles title, Novak Djokovic returned to Belgrade and was greeted by thousands of fans who had gathered to welcome their national hero home.

On Sunday, Djokovic defeated Australia’s Nick Kyrgios 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 to life his 21st Grand Slam singles title – his first since winning at the All England Club 12 months ago.

While there may be uncertainty with regards to when Djokovic will be able to next play a Grand Slam tournament, given the entry rules for the United States and his three-year ban in Australia, there was no uncertainty about how much the Serbian public adore their local champion.

Djokovic was clearly moved by the welcome he received, saying he would remember the reception he received forever.

“These are definitely the most beautiful moments in my life, when I have the blessing to play the sport that I love so much, in which I managed to achieve great success, and when I achieve that, I can come back and celebrate with our people,” Djokovic said as quoted by Sportklub.

“Thank you, you are wonderful. Lots of Serbian tricolors, lots of children, young people. It fills me forever. Moments like these are worth living, working, playing tennis. Trophies are fleeting, but these moments where we share success together, where we share success together, I will carry in my heart forever,”

Despite his win, Djokovic dropped to No 7 in the latest world rankings on Monday since no points were allotted for this year’s Wimbledon Championships.

If the Serb is not permitted to play in the United States due to his decision to remain unvaccinated, he could slide further down in the coming months.
