Serena Williams, Wawrinka, Van Rijthoven among Wimbledon wildcard recipients

With less than two weeks to go, Wimbledon has announced its initial list of wild cards, with a few more to be announced in the coming days

Wimbledon, which gets underway at the All England Club in less than two weeks, has announced its initial list of wildcards with 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams, three-time Major winner Stan Wawrinka and surprise ‘s-Hertogenbosch champion Tim van Rijthoven joining a host of British players in the list.

Williams, a seven-time champion at Wimbledon, has not played a match since her opening-round retirement at Wimbledon in 2021. The 40-year-old American will begin her comeback in the doubles event at Eastbourne next week before making her singles comeback at Wimbledon.

Joining Williams as wildcard entrants for the women’s singles event are five British players, with two more wildcards yet to be announced.

Three-time Major winner Stan Wawrinka, who is only missing a Wimbledon title to complete a career Grand Slam, is ranked 290th in the world and returned to the tour in late March after a year on the sidelines due to injury. The 37-year-old Swiss’ best performance at Wimbledon has been back-to-back quarter-final appearances in 2014 and 2015.

Dutchman Tim van Rijthoven, who won the Libema Open in Netherlands on Sunday as a local wild card having never won an ATP-level main draw match prior to that, is also among the wildcard recipients along with five British players and one wild card yet to be announced.
