No 9 seed Cameron Norrie won against Belgian David Goffin 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 to move into the last four of Wimbledon at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Tuesday afternoon.

“Just winning a match like this… It’s flashbacks of all the hard work, the pre-seasons, the sacrifices I’ve had to make,” he said. “It definitely pays off. It feels pretty good.”

Norrie, aged 26, will play his first major semi-final. It was no wonder he was speechless immediately after the match, overcome by the occasion and probably also by the evident emotion of his camp, including his parents – who, living in New Zealand, have missed most of his rapid rise to the top of the game due to travel restrictions during the pandemic.

Before Wimbledon 2022, Norrie’s best campaign at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the third Round at the Australian Open (2021), Roland-Garros (2021 and 2022) and US Open (2020).

Norrie, ranked No 12, will play Serb Novak Djokovic, the top seed, next.

He is the fourth British male player in the Open Era to reach the semifinals in Wimbledon after Roger Taylor, Tim Henman and Andy Murray. Murray was the latest one in 2016.

Ahead of his victory, Cameron Norrie defeated Spaniard Pablo Andujar (6-0, 7-6 (3), 6-3), Spaniard Jaume Munar (6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-0, 6-2), American Steve Johnson (6-4, 6-1, 6-0) and American Tommy Paul, the No 30 seed (6-4, 7-5, 6-4).

Goffin, ranked No 58, failed is reaching the first semi-final of his career. He beat qualifier Radu Albot (6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (5)), Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 31 seed (6-1, 6-2, 6-4), Frenchman Ugo Humbert (4-6, 7-5, 6-2, 7-5) and American Frances Tiafoe, the No 23 seed (7-6 (3), 5-7, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5) in the previous rounds.
