WTA Rankings – Bencic closing in on top-10, Maria and Pigossi surge

Belinda Bencic is making a beeline in the direction of the top-10, thanks to her title in Charleston. Find out who else is rising up the WTA rankings this week.

While there weren’t many big shakeups in the WTA’s top-10 in this week’s rankings, there were some monumental climbs made elsewhere. Belinda Bencic, the champion at Charleston, pushed closer to a top-10 return, while Bogota champion and runner-up Tatjana Maria and Laura Pigossi made breathtaking leaps to the fringe of the top-100 from well outside the top-200.

Bencic – nearing a top-10 return

Switzerland’s Bencic edged Ons Jabeur in a highly competitive final at Charleston, claiming her sixth career title with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 triumph over the Tunisian No 1. For her efforts Bencic, a 25-year-old former world No 4, becomes the biggest riser inside the WTA’s top-20 – she climbs eight spots from 21 to 13.

Maria – mother of two closing in on top-100

Bogota featured a final of two talents ranked outside the top-200, and produced the tour’s first champion from outside the top-200 since 2019. Germany’s Tatjana Maria defeated Laura Pigossi in a battle of qualifiers, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Maria, just a year removed from giving birth to her second daughter, rises from 237 to 114 in Monday’s rankings – a jump of 123 spots – while Pigossi jumps 86 spots from 212 to 126.

Maria became the first WTA player this century to win a title as a mother of two.

Anisimova and Alexandrova jump higher after reaching Charleston semis

Amanda Anisimova and Ekaterina Alexandrova are two more players on the rise after last week. Each reached the semi-finals at Charleston, and both rise 14 spots in the rankings for their hard work. Anisimova, a former world No 21, hurdles from 47 to 33, while Alexandrova, a former world No 25, rises from 54 to 40.

New career-high rankings or Ukraine’s Kalinina, China’s Zheng Qinwen and American Liu

Anhelina Kalinina has made an extremely strong showing over the course of the 2022 season and the Ukrainian is soaring in the rankings as a result. After reaching the quarter-finals at Charleston, the 25-year-old pushes up to a career-high 36 in Monday’s rankings – she was ranked outside the top-150 a mere 12 months ago.
