Simona Halep has moved quickly to fill the void created by the departure of Darren Cahill by restoring her coaching entourage to two, with Romanian Adrian Marcu joining Daniel Dobre in the two-time Grand Slam champion’s team.

The 30-year-old’s media spokesperson confirmed the news, which comes less than a week after she announced the end of her six-year coaching relationship with Darren Cahill, a collaboration which yielded her French Open title and helped her on the way to the world No 1 ranking.

Marcu worked with Halep in 2013 while Dobre, who was her coach when she won Wimbledon in 2019, had been working alongside Cahill during the Cornoavirus pandemic.

The pair will accompany Halep in the United States, where she will be playing in next week’s BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

“I expect her to play as well as possible in the next period and return to a very good shape. I want her to win as many matches as possible so that she can jump back up in the rankings,” Marcu told Romanian site Hotnews.

As a player, Marcu reached a career-high ranking of 190 in 1988 and played in 12 Davis Cup ties for Romania.
