American Alycia Parks defeated Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the top seed, 7-6 (7), 7-5 to lift the Lyon Open trophy at the Palais des Sports de Gerland Lyon on Sunday.

It is her maiden title in her maiden final on the tour, and her second win over a player ranked in the top 10, following her victory over Maria Sakkari in Ostrava last year.

It is also her 16th win in her past 17 matches, a run of form which stems back to her consecutive WTA 125K Series titles in Andorra and Angers, with her only loss coming in qualifying for the Australian Open against Sara Bejlek.

She is the third unseeded title winner on the WTA tour already this season, following Lauren Davis in Hobart and Zhu Lin in Hua Hin earlier on Sunday.

Earlier in the tournament, Parks, ranked No 79, beat Austrian Julia Grabher (6-3, 5-7, 6-4), Croat Petra Martic, the No 4 seed (2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2), Montenegrin Danka Kovinic, the No 7 seed (7-5, 6-2) and Belgian Maryna Zanevska (6-3, 7-6 (4)).

Garcia, ranked No 5, defeated Czech Tereza Martincova (6-4, 7-6 (4)), Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck (2-6, 6-0, 6-1), Italian Jasmine Paolini (7-5, 7-5) and Colombian Camila Osorio (6-2, 6-2) in the previous rounds of the Lyon tournament.
