Miami Open: Vondrousova upsets Pliskova to move into last 16

The Czech woman will face the winner of the match between Romanian Sorana Cirstea and Czech qualifier Karolina Muchova in the next round

Czech woman Marketa Vondrousova upset No 17 seed Karolina Pliskova 6-1, 6-2 to move into the last 16 of the Miami Open at the Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday.

This was her first win over Pliskova in four career meetings. The left-hander had not won a set over her opponent in their three previous clashes.

Vondrousova, a former Roland-Garros runner-up who is now ranked No 103, will play the winner of the match between Romanian Sorana Cirstea and Czech qualifier Karolina Muchova next.

Ahead of her victory, Vondrousova defeated German Tatjana Maria (6-4, 6-1) and Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 11 seed (6-4, 6-2).

Pliskova, ranked No 17 in the world, beat Chinese Xinyu Wang (6-2, 6-4) earlier in the week.
