First title in five years for Begu in Palermo
The fairytale ended for the young Italian, overcome by the guile and experience of her Romanian opponent
Irina Camelia Begu (JB Autissier/Panoramic)
Sixth seed Irina-Camelia Begu won the Palermo title, ending the hopes of Italian favourite Lucia Bronzetti 6-2, 6-2.
It was the first time the two had met on the tour. Bronzetti looked to win her first WTA title and extend her four-match winning streak.
But it was the world No 45 who triumphed to win her first title of the year – and her first title since Bucharest in 2017.
