Runner-up last year at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic, the second time was the charm for Daria Kasatkina.

The Russian, who lost to Danielle Collins in last year’s final, defeated Shelby Rogers 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-2 to capture the title on Sunday evening. Kasatkina broke Rogers six times while prevailing in two hours and 33 minutes.

“I want to thank every single person who is sharing now this moment with us on this beautiful court,” Kasatkina said during the trophy ceremony. “Thank you, guys. I want to wish you, everyone, a lot of love, happiness and peace in this world.”

“I played really solid,” Rogers assessed. “I thought I picked my chances well and was aggressive when I needed to be, was patient when I needed to be. She made me hit a lot of balls; she hits a lot of balls back. She’s one of the best movers on the tour. The wind started to pick up. She started putting a little more pace on the ball and being a little more aggressive, too, and just reset after that first set.”

Top-10 return for Kasatkina

Kasatkina is the first woman to reach back-to-back finals in San Jose since Serena Williams won the tournament twice in a row during the 2011 and 2012 seasons. This is the 25-year-old’s fifth title overall and first of the season. She is tied for third on the WTA Tour with 32 match wins in 2022 and she will break back into the top 10 for the first time since 2019. Kasatkina’s triumph means Coco Gauff’s top-10 debut will have to wait.

Rogers was playing in her fourth WTA final and seeking her first title since 2016 (Rio de Janeiro).
