American wildcard Taylor Townsend advanced to the second round of the Thoreau Open by defeating Swiss wildcard Lulu Sun 6-3, 6-0 at Thoreau Tennis club in Concord on Monday.

Townsend, ranked No 246, will play Belgian Ysaline Bonaventure next.
