Tokyo Open: Zheng moves into final

Qinwen Zheng edged out Veronika Kudermetova 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (3) on Saturday night and will face Russian Liudmila Samsonova for the title

Chinese Qinwen Zheng moved into the final of the Tokyo Open by edging out Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 4 seed, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (3) at the Ariake Coliseum and Ariake Tennis Forest Park on Saturday night.

Zheng, ranked No 36, will play Russian Liudmila Samsonova next.

Ahead of her victory, the 19-year-old Chinese won against Japanese Misaki Doi (6-2, 6-4), Spaniard Paula Badosa, the top seed (6-3, 6-2) and American Claire Liu (6-4, 7-5).

Kudermetova, ranked No 13, defeated Mexican qualifier Fernanda Contreras Gomez (6-0, 6-1) and Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 5 seed (6-7 (4), 7-6 (6), 6-1) in the previous rounds of the Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament.
