Austrian Dominic Thiem won against American Marcos Giron 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 to move into the quarter-finals of the Gijon Open at the Palacio deportes on Wednesday evening.
Thiem, ranked No 165, will face the winner of the match between Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 4 seed, and French qualifier Manuel Guinard next.
The Austrian beat Portuguese João Sousa (6-2, 6-0) ahead of his victory. Giron, ranked No 62, won against Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas, the No 8 seed (4-6, 6-4, 6-2).
