Chinese Xiyu Wang edged out American Alison Riske-Amritraj, the No 8 seed, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (1) to reach the second round of the Mérida Open at the Yucatan Country Club on Monday night.
Wang, ranked No 62, will play the winner of the match between Australian qualifier Kimberly Birrell and Hungarian Anna Bondar next.
