Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed, won the Madrid Open tournament by beating Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at the Caja Magica on Saturday evening.
Ahead of her victory, Sabalenka, ranked No 2, defeated Romanian Sorana Cirstea (6-4, 6-3), Colombian wildcard Camila Osorio (6-4, 7-5), Russian wildcard Mirra Andreeva (6-3, 6-1), Egyptian Mayar Sherif (2-6, 6-2, 6-1) and Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 9 seed (6-4, 6-1).
Swiatek, ranked No 1, beat Austrian lucky loser Julia Grabher (6-3, 6-2), American Bernarda Pera, the No 28 seed (6-3, 6-2), Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No 16 seed (6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-3), Croat Petra Martic, the No 27 seed (6-0, 6-3) and Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 12 seed (6-1, 6-1) earlier in the tournament.
