Serb Laslo Djere advanced to the last 16 of the Rome Masters when Chilean Cristian Garin retired at the Foro Italico on Sunday afternoon.
Djere, ranked No 62, led 6-3, 2-1 when Garin, ranked No 79, pulled out on Sunday at the Foro Italico.
The Serb will face the winner of the match between Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 4 seed, and Kazakh Alexander Bublik next.
Laslo Djere benefited from the abandonment of Frenchman Constant Lestienne (6-1) and won against Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, the No 23 seed (6-2, 6-4) ahead of his victory.
In the previous rounds of the Italian Open, the Chilean edged out Argentinian Pedro Cachin (6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5)) and American Tommy Paul, the No 16 seed (4-6, 6-3, 6-4).
