Birmingham Classic: Ostapenko books spot in quarter-finals

Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the second seed, moved into the quarter-finals of the Birmingham Classic by winning against American wildcard Venus Williams 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 at Edgbaston Priory Club on Thursday evening.
Ostapenko, ranked No 17, will face Pole qualifier Magdalena Frech next.
In the previous round of the Birmingham tournament, the Latvian beat Czech Linda Noskova (6-2, 5-7, 6-1).
Venus Williams edged out Italian Camila Giorgi (7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (6)) in the previous round of the Birmingham tournament.
