Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 7 seed, edged out Canadian wildcard Eugenie Bouchard 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-4 to reach the last 16 of the Guadalajara Open Akron on Monday night.
Kudermetova, ranked No 19, will face the winner of the match between Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska and Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, the No 10 seed, next.
Bouchard, ranked No 248, beat Mexican Renata Zarazua (6-1, 7-6 (4)) in the previous round.
