American Sofia Kenin moved into the last 16 of the Guadalajara Open Akron by winning against Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, the No 12 seed, 6-2, 7-6 (5) on Tuesday evening.
Kenin, ranked No 53, will play the winner of the match between Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 6 seed, next.
The 2020 Australian Open champion has win six of her last seven matches after reaching the final last week at the San Diego Open. That was Kenin’s first final since 2020 and caused her ranking to soar from No 93 to No 53 in this week’s rankings.
The American defeated Canadian qualifier Carol Zhao (6-4, 6-3) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round, Kalinina, ranked No 28, won against American qualifier Grace Min (6-2, 6-0).
