German qualifier Maximilian Marterer advanced to the semi-finals of the European Open by winning against Frenchman Hugo Gaston 6-3, 6-2 at the Lotto Arena in Antwerp on Friday.
Marterer, ranked No 127, will face Kazakh Alexander Bublik, the No 3 seed, next.
The German defeated Frenchman Richard Gasquet, the No 7 seed (6-3, 6-4) and Portuguese Nuno Borges (6-3, 7-6 (3)) earlier in the tournament. In the previous rounds of the Antwerp Open, Gaston, ranked No 96, won against Arthur Rinderknech (7-6 (7), 6-4) and edged out German Jan-Lennard Struff, the second seed (5-7, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (11)).
