Transylvania Open: Korpatsch wins first title, denying Ruse home victory

Tamara Korpatsch has won her first title on the WTA Tour, beating wildcard Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 6-4 to claim the Transylvania Open trophy at the BTarena in Cluj-Napoca on Sunday afternoon.

Showing great composure in a match where the crowd was quite clearly rooting for Romania’s Ruse, Korpatsch repelled four of eight break points while winning her opponent’s serve on six occasions. This was all that was required to win the match in straight sets, as the German held on to her advantage to lift a maiden WTA title.

Earlier in the tournament, Korpatsch, ranked No 105, defeated Frenchwoman Leolia Jeanjean (6-4, 2-6, 6-3), No 8 seed Jodie Burrage (2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5)), Ukrainian Daria Snigur (3-6, 6-2, 6-4) and Eva Lys (6-4, 6-3).

Ruse, ranked No 188, beat American Alycia Parks, the second seed (6-2, 1-6, 6-4), Hungarian Anna Bondar (7-6 (4), 6-2), Colombian Emiliana Arango (6-1, 0-6, 6-1) and Spaniard Rebeka Masarova, the No 4 seed (6-1, 6-4) in the previous rounds of the Cluj-Napoca tournament.
