Russian qualifier Timofeeva ends Wozniacki’s Australian Open

Russian qualifier Maria Timofeeva reached the third round of the Australian Open by winning against Dane wildcard Caroline Wozniacki 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 at Melbourne Park on Wednesday night.
Timofeeva, ranked No 170, will face the winner of the match between Russian qualifier Alina Korneeva and Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 10 seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, the 20-year-old Russian defeated French wildcard Alize Cornet (6-2, 6-4).
Wozniacki, ranked No 252, benefited from the retirement of Pole Magda Linette, the No 20 seed (6-2, 2-0) in the previous round.
