Lucky loser Mccartney Kessler won against No 6 seed Claire Liu 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the last eight of the Puerto Vallarta Open on Thursday.
Kessler, ranked No 153, will face the winner of the match between Canadian Rebecca Marino and Frenchwoman Leolia Jeanjean next.
In the previous round, Mccartney Kessler beat Serb Natalija Stevanovic (6-3, 6-1).
Liu, ranked No 109, edged out qualifier Varvara Lepchenko (6-3, 1-6, 7-5) in the 32.
