Indian Wells: Mertens books spot in third round
Elise Mertens won against Xinyu Wang 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday evening and will face the winner of the match between Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 14 seed, and Japanese Naomi Osaka in the next round

Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 24 seed, defeated China’s Xinyu Wang 6-1, 6-4 to move into the third round of the Indian Wells at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Saturday evening.
Mertens, ranked No 28, will face the winner of the match between Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 14 seed, and Japanese Naomi Osaka next.
In the previous round of the Indian Wells tournament, Wang, ranked No 42, won against Slovak Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (6-0, 6-4).
