Defending champion Sabalenka ends Collins’ win streak to reach quarter-finals in Madrid

Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed and defending champion, advanced to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open by defeating American Danielle Collins, the No 13 seed, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the Caja Magica on Monday evening.
Sabalenka, ranked No 2, will face Russian Mirra Andreeva next. The result ended Collins’ 15-match winning streak.
Collins led by a set and a break before Sabalenka gradually reeled her in, her power on serve and from the baseline eventually proving the difference between the two.
The Belarusian won against Pole Magda Linette (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) and edged out American wildcard Robin Montgomery (6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament, Collins, ranked No 15, edged out Serb qualifier Olga Danilovic (4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8)) and beat Romanian qualifier Jaqueline Cristian (3-6, 6-4, 6-1).
