Wimbledon: Ailing Hurkacz retires, Fils through to third round at a major for the first time

Frenchman Arthur Fils reached the third round of Wimbledon when Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 7 seed, retired on Thursday at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London.

Fils, ranked No 34, led 7-6 (2), 6-4, 2-6, 6-6 (8) when Hurkacz, ranked No 7, pulled out on Thursday after suffering a right knee injury.

The Frenchman becomes the youngest player to defeat a Top-10 player in the men’s singles at #Wimbledon since Nick Kyrgios beat Rafael Nadal in 2014.

The 20-year-old Frenchman will play the winner of the match between Tomas Machac and Russian Roman Safiullin next.

Arthur Fils edged out Swiss Dominic Stricker (6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4) in the previous round of The Championships.

In the first round of The Championships, the Pole edged out qualifier Radu Albot (5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4).
